Josiah "Jazza" Brooks is an Australian-based musician and pop-culture based artist who often features pieces on his YouTube channel (DrawwithJazza). He does speed drawings, internet challenges, and tutorials. His works include portraits of a variety of famous characters such as Spider-Man, Hulk, Zelda, Joker, and Ky Lo Ren. He often makes his own characters as well for many of his short animations. This includes himself at the introduction to each of his videos. He also works with a variety of different materials including tablets, Copic markers, and colored pencils. Jazza drew the Hulk in April 2016. He put his own twists on the character. He used pencil and ink and Copic markers. It is believed to be in his sketchpad. There is no setting to the piece. The drawing is additive. In the picture, the Hulk is supposed to be in his final stages of getting angry. The elements of design that pertain to this piece are color, texture, space, and form. Color pertains to this piece because all of the greens flow smoothly together and stand out against the white background. Texture pertains to this piece because of the muscles and veins that are shown. Space and form also pertain to this piece because of the shadows and highlights helping to make the subject look three-dimensional. The principles of design that pertain to this piece are symmetrical balance, scale, and contrast. There is a symmetrical balance in the drawing because of the arms and legs being in correlating positions on the paper. Scale pertains to this piece because of the size of his body compared to his head. Contrast also pertains to this piece because of the green against the Hulk's classic purple pants. When I look at this piece I feel repelled because it looks like the Hulk is about to charge at me. Therefore, the mood of the work would be angry. The drawing tells no new story about the Hulk. It is a non-objective piece. The piece evokes a respectful response because of the updated features and colors of the Hulk. The artist created the piece for views on his YouTube channel. I like the piece because of the uniqueness of it even though it is a classic comic book character. It should not be an important piece in art history because there are also many people who have recreated the Hulk. The piece, however has had influence on other popular art blogger's works. There is no specific title to the work.
Concentrations
The central idea of my concentration is to blend reality and fantasy together. I try to portray this in individual stories within each set of pictures. To mix the two genres, I take a mythical creature and put a few of them in famous places within a city or region in the world. I used Copic Markers, which are alcohol based, to draw each sinister yet humorous image in each set. For example, I used the alcohol markers to color in what I had sketched and then cleaned up with sharpie in the first image. I took the idea of zombies and decided to place them in Washington D.C. I put one in front of the White House, three in front of the Washington Monument, and one in front of the Lincoln Memorial. I also drew an extra picture showing the feet of the zombies meandering across a D.C. street. Sometimes, I will try to relate the area and the creature more. For example, I chose Las Vegas for aliens, because it is near Area 51.
